Canadian Medical Association Journal, , "Jordan's principle, governments' paralysis."Noni
MacDonald MDMSc, Senior Editor, Public Health; Amir Attaran LLB PhD, CMAJ Editorial-Writing Team Member.
MacDonald and Attaran teamed up on a forceful editorial to denounce provincial/federal
squabbling of the worst kind: petty bickering about which is responsible for funding the care required by an
aboriginal child, squabbling that ultimately leads to a child's death, far from family and community. The
writers endorse what is called Jordan's Principle, which declares the medical needs of First Nations children
come first, bureaucratic considerations second. The authors further recommend that if governments ignore that
principle, they should be sued.

HighwaySTAR Magazine, "The selfish and the selfless"Jim Park,
Editor.
In this editorial/eulogy, Park imagines what would have been David Virgoe's last thoughts in
the seconds before that horrific accident on highway 400, June 18, 2007. David Virgoe was a trucker heading
north on 400 when his truck was clipped by one of three street racers. The chain of events forced him to
choose between self-preservation and self sacrifice; he steered his truck toward the ditch to the right where
it would cause the least damage, at least to others. This compelling piece reminds us all of life and death
decisions truckers and other professional drivers make in a normal workday.

Canadian Wood Products,"A
solid Finnish."Scott Jamieson, Editor/Group Publisher.
This is a lively written piece, which details the cutting edge manner in which Finland's
sawmills operate. The writer managed to present conditions in Finnish plants and comparisons to North
American operations without clobbering the reader with a lecture. Instead, he deftly manages to present a
piece that should start a conversation among clever managers about new ways to operate.

Canadian Occupational Safety,, "Bumpers and bruises."Todd Phillips, Editor; Michelle
Morra, Freelance Writer.
After reading this piece you want to call your MPP, MLA, MP, regulators and unions to ask why
the rules aren't being obeyed? And why it takes so long to enact safety measures? A lot of work and research
went into this piece about the myriad safety failings in Canadian auto plants. The writer showed her skill by
presenting the issues and details in readily accessible terms, without falling into technical jargon or
writing down to an outsider.

While environmental issues have become top of mind elsewhere, the transportation business has

Canadian Medical Association Journal,"Salon."Robert Sibley, Senior Writer, Ottawa Citizen; Ken
Walker, Physician & Author; Alan Cassels, Drug Policy Research, University of Victoria.
Three writers cover three fascinating topics with verve, enthusiasm, knowledge and humour. No
wonder this CMAJ column has had such great success since its launch last year. These short, yet informative
and well written, columns diagnose the medicalization of premature ejaculation, explode the link between
doctors and terrorism and show the inhuman cruelty and fiscal folly of bringing to term severely abnormal
fetuses, such as twins joined at the head. What a joy to read contrarian articles that are informative,

Access to justice is the greatest ethical issue facing the Canadian legal profession, says

presents an intriguing and well-argued vision of a medicare-like national legal system for Canada. Finally,
in a slightly different vein, Slayton's third column pulls off the bed sheets on lawyers sleeping with their
clients. Legal Ethics is one column that's both good and good for you!

Le Coopérateur agricole, "En Alberta, l'eau s'enflamme!"Nicolas Mesly,
Journaliste.
Mesly seizes readers' attention from his first words- a breeder describes the horror of a cow
in pain and bleeding - and he doesn't let go throughout his powerful description of the battle between
Alberta's beef and petroleum lobbies. He introduces farmers who are struggling to prove that the petroleum
industry's presence is being felt in their homes and in their fields, while companies maintain that there is
no scientific evidence of contamination. It is a gripping tale of how our hunger for energy is creating havoc
on the homestead.

converting food crops - corn and sugar cane - into clean energy sources. It's a story of government policy
driving a big business here and around the world, and it pits powerful factions against each other in the
struggle to feed both people and voracious energy demands.

About the Category: The Internet continues to gain respect and attention as a valid
medium for building brands and strengthening customer relationships. The valuable conversations taking place
between companies and their consumers is a critical component, along with providing valuable information in a
pleasing design that is easy to navigate.

Salon Magazine, "www.Salon52.com." Stephen
Puddister, Editor-in-chief; Morella Aguirre, Associate Editor; Gillian Tsintziras, Art Director; Guillermo
Ohno, Art Assistant.
Salon52.ca shows off a unique homepage layout that effectively captures the look and feel of
the magazine. The homepage navigation is clean and innovative in the use of a sitemap layout. While not rich
in text-based articles, the use of web technology on this image-heavy site is appropriate for the industry
and its intended audience. The use of 3rd party tools for the job board and forum were well-intentioned but
should complement the look and feel to improve the overall consistency of the rest of the site. The site is a
successful companion to the printed magazine.

Today's Trucking, "www.TodaysTrucking.com." Rolf Lockwood, Publisher; Marco Beghetto,
Senior Editor; Martin Smith, Webmaster; Russell Fairley, Web Editor.
It is clear that Today's Trucking knows its audience well. The feature image on the home page
anchors the home page well, and the conservative use of colour results in a site that does not feel busy
despite the rich amount of content in the site. This site's use of iconography continues to be successful.
For the second year in a row, TodaysTrucking.com manages to deliver a great deal of content in a
well-organized, easy to navigate package.

Good creative and bold approach to portrait photography. This could have been a very staid and
typical cover shot but you went for fun and wild and it paid off.

Canadian Underwriter, "Are we ready?"David Gambrill, Editor;
Vanessa Mariga, Associate Editor; Gerald Heydens, Art Director.
Judges were impressed with the sensitive image of a rescue worker in what must be the most
important story of the decade for this industry. The uncluttered design respected the gravity of the story by
leaving out inset photos or cover lines.

The design of this book reflects its readership and the material - very forward thinking and
